Appearance: Tiny, barely over a meter tall, Kusajishi Yachiru is a picture of cherubic innocence, complete with bright pink hair, reddish brown eyes, rosy cheeks, and a cheerful, eager smile. Even when she’s clothed in the standard kimono that shinigami wear, she looks no more than a child…until one sees the 11th Division Vice Captain badge on her right arm. Harmless looking, her zanpakutou looks more like a toy than anything, as she carries it around with a loose cord rather than sticking it into the sash of her uniform. To add to the toy-like effect, her zanpakutou’s scabbard has tiny wheels attached to it to carry it around, as well as the child-like flowery pattern on the pink crossguard.

Personality: Cute, cheerful, upbeat, suffering from a tragic case of ADD, and extremely energetic, Yachiru is a precocious, playful child who is curious about anything and everything odd under the sun. With a ready laugh and a naturally fearless manner – she is constantly attached to the bloodthirsty 11th Division Captain’s left shoulder like an adorable little leech, which speaks volumes about her blatant deficiency in the fear gene – she pursues anything worthy of interest enthusiastically; e.g., her general harassment of one Kuchiki Byakuya.

However, like the child that she is, she resents being criticized in any way, and would not hesitate to use violence against the perpetrator. E.g, the biting of Madarame Ikkaku’s bald, shiny, shiny head, and headbutts Inoue Orihime when provoked. And also can be easily pacified with sweets and assorted things that kids love. In addition to that, it’s a habit of hers to give people nicknames, like Maki-maki, Shiny Bald Head, etc.

Nevertheless, she has her serious side as well, and is reflected when she gets into more serious moments and reveals her immense reiatsu and speed (case in point: Ichigo himself did not even notice her standing on his shoulder until she spoke). Despite her height, Yachiru can be extremely intimidating when the situation calls for it.

Abilities/Weaponry: However, before one could write her off as a harmless, pesky little child who needs constant supervision, a few yards of rope and a solid pole, it should be remembered that although this little girl who is shorter than even Gotei 13’s most famous midget Hitsugaya Toushirou, she is, essentially, the Vice-Captain of the most bloodthirsty, combat-inclined division, working directly under Zaraki Kenpachi, Soul Society’s most fearsome Captain. Although she is tiny, Yachiru is also incredibly strong, as shown as she picked up a fallen Kenpachi easily and hopping up into a building before disappearing out of sight.

It should also be noted that Kenpachi is at least 6 times her size and weight.

Although not much is shown about her abilities, the fact that she was made Vice-Captain and that no one has challenged her for her position proves that she is very much stronger than she looks. However, since Yachiru holds the post of Vice-Captain, it might be assumed that she would have already achieved shikai, but she did not take the entrance exam to get her position, and it is more likely that she does not have one, much like Zaraki. This claim can be backed up by the fact that she had once commented that ‘getting help from your zanpakutou is cheating. Ken-chan won, not Ichigo.’. Her strength is clear even without the use of the shikai.

Weaknesses: Kenpachi is the first man in her life, and she loves and adores him like a daughter loves a father. Although she adheres strictly to a warriior’s code when a one-on-one fight is concerned – just like every well-trained 11th Division member – it’s clear that Yachiru worries for her Ken-chan, in her own little way. Also, she does not have a sense of direction. At all. Chances are that she probably won’t be able to find her way out of a breadbox even if her life depended on it. And if her life really depended on it, she would probably just do what Kenpachi had ingrained into her: to "kill the shit out of the fucker."

Or, like Yumichika had once taught her: to kick the male twice in the balls – hard – and to time it properly such that when the male attacker gags and vomits, to step on the windpipe so that he chokes and dies a horrible, messy death.

However, with her rather simplistic, child-like view of life and everything else, Yachiru can be easily manipulated, and can be a considerable asset to the person she chooses to listen to.

History: Kusajishi Yachiru hailed from the Rukongai’s second-worst, lawless district (Kusajishi), and her parents were murdered in front of her eyes when she was a baby. It was then that a nameless, but highly skilled sword fighter from Zaraki, the worst district in Rukongai, slayed the murderers right in front of her and found her.

Despite the horrible scene of blood and gore, baby Yachiru did not cry. She even crawled towards the swordsman, intrigued by the color and smell of the blood, unafraid and curious. It was then that Kenpachi had decided to take the baby under his proverbial wing, and called her Yachiru, naming her after the person he had really cared about. The swordsman named himself Kenpachi that day as well, and from that day on, the pair became known, respectively, as Kusajishi Yachiru and Zaraki Kenpachi, two of the most formidable, battle-hungry individuals in Soul Society.

It was unknown as to how they had managed to enter Soul Society at all, but it was rumored that Kenpachi’s immense skill with the blade – even without achieving the shikai or bankai – had guaranteed him entrance to become a shinigami. Of course, Yachiru, who had presumably been taught and trained by Kenpachi himself, became a shinigami as well, and watched as Zaraki Kenpachi killed the Captain of the 11th Division in a fair duel to take the title for himself.

Years after that, Yachiru had watched Ken-chan fight one of the most exciting battles of his life, the fight between him and one Kurosaki Ichigo, who had broken into Soul Society to save Kuchiki Rukia, who was sentenced to death.

It was also the first time that Yachiru had ever seen him lose. Despite that, Yachiru had taken an affectionate liking to ‘Icchy’, and said that he was Ken-chan’s friend. She provided help to Inoue Orihime and the others by dispatching the stronger enemies who were after them, leaving them free to head towards where Rukia’s execution was about to take place.
